Dès la phase zygotène de la prophase 1 (synapsis), les deux chromosomes X homologues (paternel et maternel) s'apparient et s'accolent suivant leur longueur. Cet accolement forme donc un bivalent qui, à la phase suivante (pachytène) va se raccourcir et s'épaissir. (ESSE Vol. 14, 3, 1977, p. 2)
