Autrefois, les spectateurs s'entassaient au parterre, pêle-mêle et debout, C'est à la fin du XVIIIe siècle que l'on commença à garnir de banquettes cette partie de la salle, Devenu plus confortable, le parterre a ensuite prolongé les fauteuils d'orchestre, tout en restant d'un prix plus modique. Il disparu dans le théâtres contemporains, où l'orchestre, divisé généralement en plusieurs séries, occupe tout le rez-de-chaussée.
