Peripheral neuropathic pain is the term used to describe situations where nerve roots or peripheral nerve trunks have been injured by mechanical and/or chemical stimuli that exceeded the physical capabilities of the nervous system.

Ces douleurs (pour 10 % de la population) concernent le système nerveux situé à la périphérie de l’organisme et non le système nerveux central (celui du cerveau et de la mœlle ­épinière). La fonction des nerfs est celle d’un signal d’alarme qui envoie un message douloureux lors d’agressions diverses – traumatismes, zona, etc. En cas d’anomalie de ce processus, certaines substances sont alors sécrétées (histamine, sérotonine), qui irritent les fibres nerveuses conductives. Nous parlons alors d’une «soupe inflammatoire», qui amplifie une douleur de façon excessive.
