Record number: 2, Textual support number: 1 CONT
Petroglyphs are images incised in rock, usually by prehistoric, especially Neolithic, peoples. They were an important form of pre-writing symbols, used in communication from approximately 10,000 B.C. to modern times, depending on culture and location. The word comes from the Greek words "petros" meaning "stone" and "glyphein" meaning "to carve" ... The term "petroglyph" should not be confused with "pictograph," which is an image drawn or painted on a rock face. 3, record 2, English, - petroglyph

Un pétroglyphe est un dessin symbolique gravé sur de la pierre (surface rocheuse à l'état naturel). Le terme provient des mots grecs «petros» pour pierre et «glyphein» pour gravure. Un «pétroglyphe» n'est donc pas un pictographe — qui raconte chronologiquement une histoire — ni de l'Art pariétal — qui est une peinture [sur] des parois de grottes. 5, record 2, French, - p%C3%A9troglyphe
Record number: 2, Textual support number: 2 CONT
Les pétroglyphes sont généralement associés aux peuples préhistoriques néolithiques, et furent la forme dominante des symboles de pré-écriture utilisés pour la communication de 10 000 av. J.-C. jusqu'à 5 000 av. J.-C. 5, record 2, French, - p%C3%A9troglyphe
