Le principe est simple : puisque des fils électriques passent un peu partout dans la maison ou dans les bureaux, pourquoi ne pas s'en servir pour transporter autre chose que de l'énergie électrique? La technologie à courant porteur est déjà mise à profit pour transmettre des informations pour la gestion du réseau électrique ou, dans certains pays, comme support téléphonique. Évolution logique, elle permet désormais d'utiliser le réseau électrique pour le transformer en réseau informatique. Ainsi, chaque prise de courant donne un accès immédiat au serveur ou aux autres ordinateurs connectés par ce moyen.
