As the richer ores of gold (and other metals) are depleted, it is necessary for mining companies to focus on low-grade refractory gold-bearing ores in which the gold is encapsulated in the crystal structure of a sulphide matrix (typically pyrite). These ores cannot be broken down by cyanidation without an oxidative pre-treatment such as nitric acid oxidation, roasting, pressure oxidation or biological oxidation using microorganisms. 4, record 1, English, - pressure%20oxidation

Traitement en autoclave. La majeure partie du minerai de la propriété Goldstrike est «réfractaire» et contient de l'or enfermé dans des minéraux sulfurés. La présence de sulfure diminue l'efficacité de la lixiviation au cyanure et réduit considérablement la récupération d'or à partir de ces minerais. Pour améliorer la récupération, le minerai réfractaire est soumis à un traitement supplémentaire entre les circuits de broyage et de lixiviation, soit l'oxydation sous pression («traitement en autoclave»), afin d'oxyder les minéraux sulfurés.
