L'escalier banal suffit à franchir un talus dès que la hauteur et la largeur des marches ont été calculées pour éviter à l'utilisateur un effort conscient ou une démarche acrobatique. Il est établi que les dimensions additionnées de la largeur et du double de la hauteur doivent correspondre au pas moyen de l'homme, soit 65 cm. Dans la pratique, les normes s'établissent entre 12 et 15 cm pour la hauteur et 30 et 40 cm pour la largeur. La marche de 15 x 30 cm est couramment employée et très praticable.
