Reliability engineering is concerned with product life, i.e. with the performance of the product over a long term, while quality control is concerned with a much shorter period, i.e.: the manufacturing cycle up to commissioning of the product.

En 1950, un tiers seulement des dispositifs électroniques de la marine américaine fonctionnait convenablement. Une étude ultérieure de la Rand Corporation estima que pour chaque tube sous vide utilisé par les militaires, il fallait en prévoir neuf autres dans les entrepôts ou sur les carnets de commande. Les études de fiabilité ont traité ce problème en adaptant les lois de la probabilité à la prévision de la résistance de l'équipement à l'usure.
