On classe les laminoirs d'après la disposition des cylindres dans la cage. Les cages duo comprennent uniquement deux cylindres, attaqués par un moteur réversible, ce qui permet de faire les passes successives dans la même cage. Les cages trio groupent trois cylindres, les passes se donnant successivement entre le cylindre supérieur et le cylindre médian, puis entre le cylindre médian et le cylindre inférieur, sans inversion du sens de rotation du moteur.
