The motion of a ship or floating, offshore drilling rig as it moves vertically up and down.

OBS

heaving: Vertical motion of a ship, as distinguished from pitching.

OBS

According to BAKOC 66 and ENSCI 77, "heave" or "heaving" designate both the vertical rise and fall of a ship and its rectilinear movement, whereas AUTEC 69 makes a distinction between the rectilinear movement ("mouvement principal") and the vertical rise and fall ("pilonnement"), which is seen as a "mouvement secondaire".
