A recessive inherited hemolytic anemia (one of the hemoglutinopathies) caused by the abnormal properties conveyed to sickle cell erythrocytes by mutant sickle cell hemoglobin (Hb S); its cardinal features are chronic hemolytic anemia and recurrent painful episodes.

OBS

Sickle-cell anemia occurs almost exclusively in Blacks.
