A constellation of sensor satellites under development by the Air Force which, within the context of NMD [National Missile Defense], would acquire and track ballistic missiles throughout their flight and provide the first estimate of their trajectory to the BMC2 system [Battle Management, Command and Control system].

SBIRS operational requirements include four mission areas of missile warning, missile defense, technical intelligence, and battlespace characterization.

Spaced-Based Infrared System (SBIRS) will replace the current Defense Support Program (DSP) and will be a consolidated, cost-effective, flexible system designed to meet U.S. infrared (IR) space-based surveillance and warning needs through the next two or three decades.
