L'objet sur lequel l'huître se fixe est appelé le collecteur. Le processus se nomme la fixation ou la chute du naissain, la jeune huître fixée prenant le nom de naissain. Les larves d'huîtres se fixent à toutes sortes de collecteurs, mais semblent préférer les coquilles de mollusques et les matières qui contiennent des substances crayeuses.
