Dans une nouvelle intitulée Collision Ship et publié en 1942, l'écrivain Jack Williamson baptise ce concept en inventant le mot «terraforming» («terraformation» en français). Comme il le suggère, le terme «terraformation» désigne l'ensemble des opérations nécessaires à la transformation d'une planète en une autre Terre.
