En cryptographie, méthode qui consiste à changer de place chaque lettre du texte clair selon un ordre conventionnel.

OBS

On se sert généralement d'un mot clé, choisi et établi comme il est dit ci-dessus. Une fois le mot clé établi, on en numérote les lettres d'après leur ordre alphabétique normal. Puis on écrit dessous le texte clair, lettre sous lettre, et en lignes d'une longueur égale à celle de la clé; on relève enfin le texte par colonnes selon l'ordre de numérotation.
