The Canadian Space Agency (CSA) contribution to NASA's OSIRIS-REx mission is an advanced laser system known as the OSIRIS-REx laser altimeter (OLA). OLA is a hybrid of the lidar on the CSA's weather station aboard the Phoenix Mars Lander and an instrument flown on the 2005 US Air Force eXperimental Satellite System-11 (XSS-11).

La contribution de l'Agence spatiale canadienne(ASC) à la mission OSIRIS-REx de la NASA est un laser sophistiqué appelé «altimètre laser d’OSIRIS-REx»(OLA). Il s’agit d’un hybride du lidar de la station météorologique de l'ASC embarquée sur l'atterrisseur martien Phœnix et d’un instrument envoyé dans l'espace en 2005 à bord de l'eXperimental Satellite System-11(XSS-11) de la force aérienne américaine.

The Joint Precision Airdrop System (JPADS) uses GPS and a guidance, navigation and control system to accurately fly itself to a designated location point on the ground. Its gliding ram-air parachute lets it land a significant distance from its point of release, while its guidance allows high-altitude airdrops to a single location or multiple locations at one time, within an accuracy of 50-75 meters.

[...] les armées américaines disposent déjà de leur propre dispositif d’aérolargage de précision, baptisé Jpads pour «Joint Precision Air Drop System». [...] Le ParaLander d’EADS se compose d’un boîtier électronique de guidage fixé au sommet de la charge à larguer, et qui agit directement sur les suspentes pour placer l'ensemble sur la trajectoire de descente désirée. Les coordonnées GPS [Global Positioning System] du lieu d’impact sont chargées dans le boîtier de guidage par l'intermédiaire d’une liaison sans fil entre le ParaLander et un ordinateur portable, sur lequel est installé le logiciel de planification de missions. Si le système peut fonctionner de manière complètement autonome, il reste toutefois possible de désactiver le guidage automatique pour piloter à distance le ParaLander après largage. À l'atterrissage, un altimètre laser déclenche automatiquement une traction équilibrée sur les suspentes, réduisant la vitesse de descente de 7 m/s à 2, 5 m/s et permettant ainsi d’éviter un renversement de la charge au toucher.

The Geoscience Laser Altimeter System (GLAS) is an integral part of the NASA Earth Science Enterprise (ESE). GLAS is a facility instrument designed to measure ice-sheet topography and associated temporal changes, as well as cloud and atmospheric properties. In addition, operation of GLAS over land and water will provide along-track topography. GLAS will be carried on the Ice, Cloud and land Elevation Satellite (ICESat), scheduled for launch in July 2001.
