Membrane filtration is the method of choice for the analysis of fecal coliforms in water. Samples to be tested are passed through a filter of particular pore size (generally 0.45 micrometre). The microorganisms present in the water remain on the filter surface. When the filter is placed in a sterile Petri dish and saturated with an appropriate medium, growth of the desired organisms is encouraged, while that of other organisms is suppressed. ... A 100 ml volume of a water sample is drawn through a membrane filter (0.45 µm pore size) through the use of a vacuum pump. The filter is placed on a Petri dish containing M-FC agar and incubated for 24 hours at 44.5 °C (112.1 degrees F). This elevated temperature heat shocks non-fecal bacteria and suppresses their growth. 9, record 2, English, - membrane%20fecal%20coliform%20agar

2, record 2, French, - g%C3%A9lose%20pour%20d%C3%A9tection%20de%20coliformes%20f%C3%A9caux%20par%20filtration%20sur%20membrane

A chemical agent that causes a pest, as an insect, to stop eating. 7, record 12, English, - antifeedant
Record number: 12, Textual support number: 1 CONT
Chemicals possess the properties of inhibiting the feeding of insect pests ... these can be classed as antifeedants. The first chemicals noticed with these properties were initially referred to as repellants, but they are not repellants in that they do not merely drive the insect away to another plant but do actually inhibit feeding on that plant. In laboratory tests insects have remained on treated plants indefinitely and eventually starved to death without eating the leaves. In field tests the insects were free to wander elsewhere seeking food ... they either found weed plants to feed on or died of predation and starvation. 8, record 12, English, - antifeedant

2, record 19, French, - r%C3%A9plication%20non%20r%C3%A9gul%C3%A9e

Not so long ago the use of beta-aminolevulinic acid (ALA) as a potential herbicide attracted considerable attention. The acid is present in every plant species and is used in the synthesis of chlorophyll and other compounds containing porphyrin. When used in combination with bipyridyls it causes massive accumulation of chlorophyll precursors which in adequate concentrations act as phytotoxin absorbing light and producing oxygen singlets (Duke and Lydon, 1987). As the presence of light is essential, the treatment is popularly termed as the "laser herbicide". 3, record 22, English, - photodynamic%20herbicide

Operational bypasses. The trips that protect the reactor in one mode of normal operation may prevent changes to other operational states.

4, record 89, French, - chondro%C3%AFtine%206%2Dsulfate

SPA (scintillation proximity assay) is a powerful technique for assaying many biochemical processes and for this reason it is being exploited in more and more areas. Although not yet available as fully developed kits, SPA has been shown to measure a number of molecular interactions, including DNA-protein, protein-protein (for example, SH2 and SH3 interactions) and cell adhesion molecule binding. Three SPA assays, that are now available as kits, but which do not fit readily into the previously described categories of SPA assays, are RiPPA, Quan-T-RT and the SPA [3H]thymidine uptake assay system. 3, record 96, English, - scintillation%20proximity%20assay
