The French term "ex-militaire" is not to be confused with "ancien combattant" which designates a person who fought or participated in military operations during a war or an important armed conflict and who usually benefits from a special status.

À ne pas confondre avec la notion «d'ancien combattant» qui désigne une personne ayant combattu ou participé à des opérations militaires lors d'une guerre ou d'un conflit armé important et qui bénéficie habituellement d'un statut spécial. 2. Le terme «ex-membre» peut être employé comme synonyme d'«ex-militaire» s'il est jumelé à un modificateur (ex. : ex-membre des Forces canadiennes).
