The usefulness of serological results for diagnosis is highly dependent on the nature of the specimens submitted. For acute infections, reliable results require demonstration of a rising titre between acute and convalescent sera. La présence de ces anticorps est la traduction soit d'une infection antérieure, soit de la présence de l'agent pathogène responsable de la maladie en cours. Ce peut être également le résultat d'une vaccination antérieure. C'est pour cette raison qu'il est nécessaire de faire des prélèvements à une ou deux semaines d'intervalle pour montrer l'augmentation du titre (de la quantité) des anticorps spécifiques au cours de la maladie.
