For estimating the sulfur budget in a plume passing through such a diurnal cycle, it is instructive to describe the system in terms of a "two box model". The sulfur budget at any given time can then be obtained by carrying out the mass balance in each of the boxes.

Le sulfure d'hydrogène est, quant à lui, essentiellement produit par la décomposition bactérienne en milieu anaérobie, ce que l'on sait depuis les travaux de Postgate en 1959. L'estimation de l'intensité de cette source biologique, à l'échelle du globe, constitue encore un des problèmes majeurs dans l'évaluation du bilan du soufre.

OBS

Le terme «bilan» exprime avec plus de justesse la notion car il s'agit d'une constatation des faits où n'entre pas la possibilité de planification comme pourrait le suggérer «budget».
