Le niveau de la réactivité du cœur est évolutif entre la première divergence, avec des combustibles neufs, et la mise à l’équilibre atteinte après plusieurs années de fonctionnement. Cette variation est compensée par des éléments absorbants fixes en acier boré, placés dans des canaux en lieu et place d’éléments combustibles. Leur nombre évolue dans le temps. Il est calculé de manière à ce que le reliquat d’antiréactivité nécessaire soit constitué par les barres de contrôle dont l’enfoncement dans le cœur correspond à une efficacité optimale.
