The main types of sapropelic coal are cannel coal, boghead coal and torbanite. Sapropelic coals are high in volatiles, generally, dull, massive, and relatively uncommon.

OBS

Putrefaction under anaerobic conditions rather than peatification is the formative process [of sapropelic coals].
