[...] le terme d'«amiral» désigne surtout un grade dont les trois classes - amiral, vice-amiral et contre-amiral - correspondaient au XVIIe siècle aux trois divisions qui se succédaient dans la ligne de bataille d'une flotte déployée en vue du combat. Celle du centre, commandée par l'amiral, était précédée de celle du vice-amiral et suivie de celle du contre-amiral.
