Le cours vise à fournir aux étudiants et aux étudiantes un certain nombre d'outils servant au contrôle des terrains dans les exploitations minières. Le contrôle des terrains («ground control», contrôle des pressions de terrains, contrôle du terrain) consiste à procéder à des excavations en massifs rocheux qui demeurent stables, c'est-à-dire qui ne s'effondrent pas, durant une période de temps voulue (courte, moyenne ou longue), ou qui montrent une instabilité contrôlable.
