A principal U.IAA test checks the strength of single ropes, the basic ropes used in most climbing. These ropes generally measure between 9.8 and 12 millimeters in diameter.

The 11-mm. rope [known as the climber's "workhorse",] is thick enough to survive sharp rock edges, so it isn't likely to get cut. It is also very durable, and will survive many leader fall. ...
