Tous les autres déchets, de faible ou moyenne activité, peuvent se répartir selon les cas, soit dans la catégorie dite B, ou déchets alpha, des déchets de longue durée de vie de faible ou moyenne activité, soit dans la catégorie dite A, ou déchets bêta-gamma, des déchets ne contenant que peu, une très faible proportion, d'émetteurs alpha. On ne devrait jamais appeler ces derniers déchets «sans alpha», puisque des émetteurs alpha sont toujours présents, même dans des matériaux naturels, au moins à l'état de traces.
