Diploma of General University Studies. French compulsory studies diploma created in 1973 and taken by university students after the first 2 years' study. There are 7 nationally prescribed DEUG courses, each multidisciplinary but having a particular bias. The DEUG can be used as a terminal qualification or an entry qualification for the specialized courses of the second cycle leading either to a licence or bachelor's degree in 1 year or a Master's degree in 2 years.

Although the basic texts are in English, The International Encyclopedia of Higher Education and the International Handbook of Universities and other Institutions of Higher Education left "diplôme d'études universitaires générales" in French.
