Période pendant laquelle une substance, après son arrivée dans la stratosphère ou après son apparition suite à une conversion chimique, demeure dans le réservoir stratosphérique.

OBS

Alors qu'ils peuvent séjourner longtemps dans la troposphère sans causer de dommages, les hydrocarbures halogénés, qui sont des produits chimiquement inertes, sont photodissociés dans la stratosphère par les rayons solaires; ils se transforment alors en substances destructrices d'ozone.
