En 1681, Van Hoorn se rendit en Angleterre pour acheter un grand vaisseau propre pour son voyage négrier. Son choix se porta sur un ancien navire de guerre, THE MARY and MARTHA de 400 tonneaux et de 40 canons. Il le rebaptisa Le Saint-Nicolas et y fit embarquer un équipage de 150 hommes, dont le tiers était des marins anglais.
