The airways of the respiratory tract are lined with tall, columnar, ciliated epithelium dotted with mucus-secreting cells. In a healthy body, constant ciliary activity moves the overlying blanket of mucus upward. This important cleansing mechanism is called the muco-ciliary elevator.
