A pedunculated bony excrescence arising most commonly from the metaphysis, showing a narrow base and a bulbous bony cap and characteristically growing in a direction away from the nearest joint. Seen in solitary osteochondromas and multiple exostoses. [From WFOOT, 1983, p. 383.]

Excroissance osseuse pédiculée siégeant habituellement sur la métaphyse, caractérisée par une base d'implantation souvent étroite et une direction métaphyso-diaphysaire. Elle s'observe dans l'ostéochondrome solitaire et la maladie des exostoses cartilagineuses multiples.

En français, on utilise parfois les termes exostose en stalagmite et exostose en stalactite pour décrire respectivement une exostose se dirigeant vers le haut et une exostose se dirigeant vers le bas.
