Early papilledema causes blurring of the upper and lower nasal disk margins; later, the physiologic cup is obscured and the lamina cribrosa becomes indistinct. Blurring then extends to diverging vessels.

Le premier signe d'une papille œdémateuse est l'apparition d'un léger flou des bords de la papille qui commence à la partie supérieure ou inférieure du disque optique, mais généralement prédomine dans le secteur nasal. L'émergence des vaisseaux paraît noyée dans un trouble assez discret du centre de la papille et l'excavation physiologique tend à se combler.
