A la fin des années 70, l'industrie canadienne de l'assurance automobile offrait à ses titulaires de police une garantie particulière aux automobilistes sous-assurés (Underinsured Motorist Endorsement) (UIM). Cette garantie a pour but d'indemniser l'assuré lorsqu'il est une victime d'un sinistre causé par un tiers dont la couverture d'assurance est insuffisante pour lui permettre de s'acquitter de son obligation.
