Un générateur d'hypothèses lexicales s'appuyant sur des connaissances syntaxiques et sémantiques relatives au domaine linguistique choisi, permet au réseau lexical de rechercher dans tout le signal d'entrée, des mots facilement reconnaissables : ce sont des «îlots de vraisemblance» autour desquels il sera possible d'émettre des hypothèses de mots situés à gauche et à droite de ces îlots.
