On disposait de chandelles de cire ou de suif et, chez les plus riches bourgeois [romains], de lampes où l'on brûlait de l'huile d'olive à l'aide d'une mèche de coton. Ces lampes étaient le plus souvent de terre cuite. Elles avaient la forme d'une cupule munie d'un bec pour la mèche (...). Il en existait en bronze, avec plusieurs becs.
