La projection de Mercator permet [...] d'introduire un autre type de projection, très répandu en géodésie et cartographie : la projection UTM, parfois appelée MTU pour respecter la terminologie française : Mercator Transverse Universel. C'est aussi une représentation cylindrique conforme transverse, mais bâtie sur un modèle ellipsoïdique. Pour établir les formules de cette projection, ou écrit que l'image du méridien central est l'axe des Y et que ce méridien est automécoïque.
