RDIMS grew out of the Treasury Board Shared Systems Initiative. As a concept, it is designed to provide a model for the implementation of information management programs and tools. The product and the concepts work together to provide the federal government with the ability to collect and store information and to exchange information between government offices and with our clients and partners. To provide a means for the user to facilitate the process of capturing, storing, organizing, sharing, retrieving, re-using, protecting and disposing of information in an electronic environment regardless of format and without geographic or organizational barriers.

Le SGDDI, ou Système de gestion des dossiers, des documents et de l'information, émane de l'Initiative relative aux systèmes communs du Conseil du Trésor. Fondamentalement, le SGDDI constitue un modèle de mise en œuvre des programmes et outils de gestion de l'information. Le produit et le modèle sont interreliés et permettent au gouvernement fédéral de recueillir et de stocker de l'information et favorisent l'échange d'information entre les bureaux fédéraux et avec nos clients et collaborateurs. Permettre à l'utilisateur de faciliter le processus de saisie, de stockage, d'organisation, de partage, de récupération, de réutilisation, de protection et de cession électroniques de l'information, sans égard à sa présentation et aux obstacles géographiques et organisationnels.
