A characteristic of the performance of a diagnostic test, defined as the proportion of persons with a negative test result among persons who do not have the disease; it is calculated as follows: true negatives ÷ (true negatives + false positives).

The sensitivity and specificity of these different approaches vary according to specimen type and organism assayed. ... NAATS [nucleic acid amplification tests] are the most sensitive methods, and culture the most specific.

[...] lorsque l'on sélectionne des patients pour les essais d'un nouveau traitement, on doit privilégier une haute spécificité pour s'assurer que le traitement n'est donné qu'aux patients présentant la pathologie considérée.

While the plate theory and the various rate theories of chromatography describe the distribution of a solute in the system, selectivity is a consideration of the relative distributions of two or more solutes in a chromatographic process. The ability of chromatography to separate two solutes depends on the selectivity of the process and the degree to which the system can distinguish thermodynamically between the solutes. Selectivity, then, is simply a measure of the relative retention or relative mobilities of two solutes.
