Depuis une dizaine d'années le domaine du son professionnel subit aussi sa révolution, avec un transfert progressif des techniques analogiques vers le tout numérique. On distingue maintenant deux grandes catégories d'enregistreurs : - les magnétophones numériques basés sur l'utilisation d'une bande magnétique, - les stations audio numériques, encore appelées DAW («Digital Audio Workstation»). Basées sur l'emploi de supports de stockage informatique, elles regroupent un magnétophone multipistes, un éditeur de montage, une machine d'effets et un mélangeur.
