Caustic curves and surfaces are called catacaustic when formed by reflection, and diacaustic when formed by refraction.

Si on éclaire un miroir sphérique avec un faisceau parallèle à l'axe optique du système, on peut constater que les rayons ne convergent pas en un point unique, il n'y a pas stigmatisme. Les rayons sont tangents à une surface qui est la surface caustique du miroir.
