La terminologie employée pour désigner les ateliers flexibles met l'accent sur la souplesse demandée au système : aux États-Unis, le terme consacré est celui de «flexible manufacturing system» (FMS), mais on parle aussi de «computer integrated manufacturing system» (CIM), de «variable emission system» (VMS), ou de «variable manufacturing mission» (VMM). Ces sigles correspondent aux produits de certains constructeurs : FMS est une marque déposée de Kearney & Trecker, VMS-VMM de Cincinnati-Milacron.
