To estimate the vapour concentrations downwind of an accident site for determination of the flammability or toxicity hazard zone, the atmospheric dispersion of a contaminant vapour is modelled as a "puff" or "plume" according to the decision tree given in Figure 3. A gas leak form a tank is considered a semi-continuous point source, modelling as a plume, whereas the release of a large amount of gas over a very short time period of the order of seconds to minutes is considered an instantaneous point source modelled as a puff.
