El servicio consiste en la posibilidad de suscripción a un sitio Internet, de manera que si éste publica algún nuevo contenido los interesados puedan recibirlo y reciben el contenido propiamente dicho, y no sólo un mero aviso de la existencia de actualizaciones, con lo cual lo que se produce es una sindicación (redifusión) de contenidos desde una fuente de origen hacia una multitud de destinatarios. Sin embargo, para poder compartir esta información se necesitan unos programas determinados, llamados "agregadores", es decir, programas capaces de leer e interpretar las fuentes RSS o "feeds". […]Una vez que se tiene el agregador de fuentes RSS se deberán seleccionar los feeds […] que sean de interés para el usuario.

Fuente RSS: archivo generado de forma automática por el programa de gestión del weblog que, separando el contenido del diseño, recoge los títulos de las historias y o bien un extracto o el contenido completo de las anotaciones. Permite acceder a los nuevos contenidos de un weblog mediante un lector de fuentes RSS sin necesidad de visitar la página con el navegador.
