La zone abyssale-benthique comprend tout ce qui se trouve au-delà des zones [eulittorale et archibenthique] à partir de profondeurs les plus grandes et dans des conditions assez uniformes. La température (+5 à -1 °C) varie peu. Il n'y a plus de lumière, ni de saisons, et les conditions de vie sont stagnantes, sauf en ce qui concerne l'aération qui est due à des mouvements de convection.
