Pour ces applications, le matériau miracle, l'équivalent du Terfenol-D des actionneurs, appartient à la famille des verres métalliques ou Metglas [marque de commerce], découverts et commercialisés par la société américaine Allied Signal depuis les années 1975. Leurs propriétés magnétiques sont très sensibles aux contraintes mécaniques.
