The federal agency that regulates financial institutions and employer-employee pension plans under federal jurisdiction to contribute to public confidence in the Canadian financial system and the protection of the rights and interests of depositors, policy holders and creditors.

The Office of the Superintendent of Financial Institutions was established in July 1987 as a result of the government's decision to bring together into one organization the Department of Insurance, which was created over a hundred years ago, and the Office of the Inspector General of Banks, which has been established in 1925.
