University of the Arctic was formally launched in Rovaniemi, Finland in June 2001. More than 25 Canadian institutions participate in the U Arctic. [It is] funded by governments and individual educational institutions... uses both distance delivery and classroom settings to deliver courses. [This] "university without walls" is a partnership of northern colleges, universities, Indigenous organizations, and governments. It has been designed to address the educational and training needs of northern peoples.. It combines the most advanced developments in the field of distance education with traditional knowledge that has been passed down from generation to generation among the Indigenous peoples of the Arctic.
