Our members share resources, facilities, and expertise to build post-secondary education programs that are relevant and accessible to northern students. Our overall goal is to create a strong, sustainable circumpolar region by empowering northerners and northern communities through education and shared knowledge."

University of the Arctic was formally launched in Rovaniemi, Finland in June 2001. More than 25 Canadian institutions participate in the U Arctic. [It is] funded by governments and individual educational institutions... uses both distance delivery and classroom settings to deliver courses. [This] "university without walls" is a partnership of northern colleges, universities, Indigenous organizations, and governments. It has been designed to address the educational and training needs of northern peoples.. It combines the most advanced developments in the field of distance education with traditional knowledge that has been passed down from generation to generation among the Indigenous peoples of the Arctic. Traditional classroom and web-based delivery complement opportunities for student and faculty mobility to ensure the greatest possible access to the University's core programs.

Au titre de ce partenariat, l'Université de l'Arctique combine des technologies de pointe de l'enseignement à distance et le savoir ancestral, légué de génération en génération, des peuples autochtones de l'Arctique. L'enseignement traditionnel et l'enseignement à distance sur le Web se complètent et pallient la mobilité parfois limitée des étudiants et des enseignants, garantissant ainsi le meilleur accès aux programmes clés de l'Université.
