Macroscopic coal constituent (lithotype) that is hard and dull gray in color.

CONT

Banded coals grade from dull banded ("splint coal") to bright banded, depending on whether dull bands or bright bands are dominant. The bands are divided into four major lithotypes: durain (dull, grainy texture, tough), fusain (dull black, charcoal texture, hands get dirty), clarain (bright, satiny texture, brittle), and vitrain (bright, black, glassy, brittle).

Les charbons sont classés en six lithotypes en fonction de leur aspect macroscopique. On distingue les charbons humiques (lithotypes vitrain, clarain, fusain et durain) qui provienne de débris de plantes macroscopiques [et les] charbons sapropéliques (lithotypes cannel coals- spores et pollens, bogheads - algues).

CONT

Le durain est une substance, grise à brun noirâtre, à éclat mat, formant des lits fréquents mais peu abondants de quelques millimètres à plusieurs décimètres d'épaisseur. Il est fait de débris végétaux ayant perdu leur caractère originel.
