The injection blow-molding process requires two molds: one for molding the preform or parison, the other for molding the bottle. The preform mold consists of four major components: preform cavity, injection nozzle, neckring insert, and core rod assembly.

À partir d'un matériau plastifié par la chaleur, on procède à l'injection sous forte pression [...] de ce matériau à travers une buse de faible diamètre, dans une cavité du moule à préforme. Sous l'effet de la pression, le matériau plastifié remplit la cavité et se solidifie au contact des parois du moule. On obtient la préforme, c'est la phase d'injection.
