A method of climbing a slope on skis at an angle: from a standing position, skis perpendicular to the slope, the skier steps up and forward or backward with the uphill ski and then bring the downhill ski parallel to the uphill one, each step being made at an angle or the direct ascent.

OBS

The movement is done by edging the uphill ski to prevent sideslipping. There is a continuing weight transfer from the downhill ski to the uphill one, and from the uphill ski to the downhill one to climb a slope.

OBS

Sources disagree as to the name to give the movement, though they agree on the definition. The spellings "side-step" and "side step" are outdated.

Méthode pour gravir, en ski, une pente peu accentuée : d'une position debout, skis en travers de la pente, le skieur fait un pas vers le haut de la pente, de son ski amont puis ramène le ski aval parallèle au premier, chaque pas vers l'amont étant vers l'avant ou vers l'arrière par rapport à son ski aval et à angle par rapport à la pente.

Avec une bonne prise de carre amont chaque fois qu'il pose un ski, le skieur peut ainsi remonter une pente tout en avançant. Il y a un continuel transfert de poids du ski aval au ski amont et du ski amont au ski aval pour exécuter la manœuvre.

Technique utilisée surtout en ski de fond, parfois en ski alpin.

Il faut distinguer entre «montée en demi-escalier» ou «montée en diagonale» et «montée en biais» : la montée en demi-escalier se fait dans un angle constant par rapport à la ligne de pente et laisse une trace d'escalier en diagonale, chaque «marche» étant perpendiculaire à la ligne de pente; la «montée en biais» zigzague de chaque côté de la ligne de pente et de la pente et allie la montée en traverse, le pas tournant, la conversion et la montée en ciseaux selon l'accentuation de la pente.
